WATER AND POWER

Conversation in the Pangolin Pavilion with the participation of Killaloe-Ballina Local History Society

Photo: Deirdre Power

The results of a year long creative engagement between the artists Deirdre Power and Chelsea Canavan and the Limerick waterside communities, The Water Paths Archive is a collection of notebooks and journals kept by Limerick residents recording their relationship with the river, accompanied by photographs, video and sound records made by the artists throughout their creative process.

Tom Cosgrove, UL Professor of Civil Engineering, shares his knowledge of the heroic engineering project that is the great industrial legacy of the Irish Free State: the Ardnacrusha hydro-electric scheme that has reshaped the lower Shannon and changed the ecology of the whole river.

NON NATIVE SPECIES in the Shannon and Erne

Conversation in the Pangolin Pavilion

Dan Minchin has worked for many years identifying and responding to biological invasions which cause significant environmental damage or change to newly colonized habitats and native species. He will talk about the specific threats of invasive species to the environments of the Shannon and Erne waterways.

Artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly of the School of Looking believe that looking closer and longer at things affords a deeper learning experience by fixing attention. Whether we regard nature as science or as art, we can better understand its qualities and its problems if we observe carefully and document accurately. This workshop invites you to use a range of simple viewing devices - bug boxes and magnifying glasses - to observe closely samples of biodiversity found on site, and to draw these using the materials provided, in a relaxed atmosphere conducive to conversation.

TALKS

WORKSHOP

On Sunday 8th May the Eco Showboat Mayfly will dock at Kileen's Lock, Killaloe. You are invited to join us for this wonderful afternoon of art, workshops and talks.

The Mayfly’s first expedition takes her from the marina at Custom House Quay in Limerick to Killeen’s Lock in Killaloe, and through the tailgate, the monumental lock, the headrace of the Shannon hydro-electric scheme at Ardnacrusha and Parteen.  Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly will be accompanied by Deirdre Power and Chelsea Canavan to record this maiden voyage. Using a 4k drone and a 4k gimbal camera, as well Deirdre’s photographic camera, this will give us material for the first episode of the School of Looking’s River Movie.
